To be fair, platforms like Pinterest have always prioritized content discovery over followers, so this shift isn’t noticeable there. But Instagram on the other hand, spent over a decade training us to measure success by the number of followers we had. That was the metric that defined visibility, growth, and success. Then, almost overnight, they pulled the rug out from under us, shifting the focus to content discovery instead.

Now, whether someone follows you or not, it’s the algorithm that decides if your content should reach a wider audience. And the pressure to constantly outperform your past content—and compete against everyone else’s—is higher than ever, leaving many Instagram creators confused and frustrated. Not to mention, Instagram’s content ranking abilities still seem weaker than on any other social platform, including Meta’s own Threads app.

The Declining Value of a Follow

Followers just don’t carry the same weight anymore.Having a loyal following isn’t enough because even small algorithm updates can trigger major shifts in user behavior. A new feature or simple design tweak can completely change how people interact on the app. That’s why fewer people are hitting the follow button—they know following might flood their feed with similar content, or worse, or worse, they might never see that account’s content anyway.

This shift has made followers less valuable. Social media algorithms have trained users to think twice before following, making engagement and content discovery far more important. Sure, followers still matter, but if you’re focusing too much on growing your follower count, you’re wasting energy on an outdated metric.

What You Should Focus On Instead

So, if followers are dead, where should your focus go? The key now is to create content that’s built for discovery, not just for the people already following you. Focus on engagement—conversations, shares, and saves. Those are the things that actually matter to today’s algorithms.

Also, don’t forget the power of community building. Instead of chasing numbers, invest in creating a tight-knit, engaged group of people who genuinely care about what you’re putting out there. That’s far more valuable now than having a large but disengaged audience.

Looking Ahead: A New Approach to Social Media

As social media continues to evolve rapidly, one thing’s clear: the old methods of relying on followers are outdated. Sure, growing your audience is still important, but it’s time to stop obsessing over the numbers. Now it’s all about what the modern algorithms want—which is content that’s likely to resonate with users, based on their behavior and interests, not just who follows who.

So, are followers dead? In some ways, yes. But if you can pivot and adapt your strategy, you’ll find there are way better ways to thrive online!
